Slots are, by far, the most popular games in any online casino, and in quite a lot of physical ones, both in terms of how much profits they rake in and how many people play them. Most people don’t even realize just how utterly, mind-blowingly popular they are, completely overshadowing pretty much anything else, even otherwise very beloved games such as roulette or blackjack. One only needs to look at the sheer number of slots in any online casino in order to see the results of their popularity. We are completely overwhelmed by slots who are clamouring for our attention by having bigger jackpots and more outrageous bonus games. naturally, a huge presence means a whole lot of competition, and as such slots need to constantly try new things and bring us new features in order to stay ahead of the curve. With that said, it’s actually kind of mind-blowing to me just how little Reel King cares about being relevant. It doesn’t really have anything going for it, no reason to keep playing it when there are so many better slots out there. In fairness, I can see that it was deliberately designed to be simplistic, but is that a good thing?

Basic Features

Reel King is an adaptation of an extremely popular physical video slot developed by Novomatic which can often be found in places like bars or pubs. The base game was specifically designed to be as simple as possible, since, you know, it would be played by intoxicated people who may or may not be adequate enough to engage in complicated bonus games and that kind of thing. And since most bars can’t exactly pay out millions, the progressive jackpot was eliminated in favour of one that pays a maximum of a few thousand pounds.

Simplicity is the word of the day, and not the Apple kind of simplicity, either. There’s just not a whole lot that “Reel King” has going for it – it has no bonus games, no progressive jackpot, nothing to truly make it stand out from its competition. True, it has a set jackpot, Wild symbols and Scatters with a nice gimmick (more on that later), but for the most part it’s probably the most basic online slot I’ve ever played. One of the most interesting features of it is that after each win, you can choose whether you want to keep your winnings or gamble them, with repeated gamblings getting you higher and higher rewards, but also increasing the risk of losing everything. It’s a neat system, but sadly not one that’s unique or compelling enough to truly make “Reel King” stand out.

Paytable

“Reel King” only has six standard symbols, which isn’t really that much, but also increases the likelihood of landing several consecutive symbols. The lowest you can win from the standard symbols is 10 times your bet (if you get 3 cherries lined up on one of the paylines), and the highest is 200 times your bet (with 5 Ks). The fact that there’s only 20 paylines as opposed to 25 or more (as is usual with 5-reel slots) makes it a little bit harder to win than usual, but it also keeps your bets from getting out of hand, which, once again, shows how thoughtful the designers were being considering their target audience.

The special symbols are only three – Wild, Jackpot and Reel King. Wild is obvious and self-explanatory, as, just like with any other slot, Wild symbols can substitute for any other symbol in a combination. For example, if you have two Qs, followed by another symbol and then two more Qs on one of your paylines, then you wouldn’t really win anything… unless that symbol is a Wild, in which case you get 100 times your bet. Jackpot symbols, represented by a bag of gold with the word JACKPOT stamped over it, can act as regular line symbols just like the rest – if you get three of them lined up you get 100 times your bet, while getting 5 in a row nets you 500 times your bet.

Bonus Rounds/Free Spins

But the fact that the Jackpot symbols can also serve as regular line symbols that give you winnings if you get a few of them in a row shouldn’t distract you from their true purpose (even if said winnings are pretty good). As their name suggests, their goal is to reward you with 10,000 times your bet. While that’s nowhere near as good as the jackpots offered by hits like Mega Moolah and Millionaire Genie, it’ll still get your heart beating fast. In order to activate it, your entire screen needs to be filled with Jackpot symbols, which is obviously a rather rare event.

And the best part is that this isn’t even the most interesting aspect of Reel King. No, that honour falls to the symbol bearing the same name, which is literally a reel that is also a king (or maybe a king that happens to be a reel? I’m overthinking this). When you get one on one of your paylines, then congratulations – every time you win on that payline, the little reel that is the king’s body will also spin, with its own combinations of symbols that can give you up to 500 times your bet, for free. The moment that any of the lines that the king is on fails to win he disappears back to his reel kingdom, so the longer your streak is the more free spins you get. And to top it all off, you can also get multiple kings all at once, each giving you a free spin if you win on their payline. Pretty crazy!

Experience of Playing the Slot and Other Recommended Games

If you’re looking for a fun and exciting slot machine with shiny, sparkling graphics, catchy music, a huge jackpot and fun bonus games, then “Reel King” is definitely not something for you. It’s a very simple slot that was specifically designed to be placed in pubs and other similar venues, and as such was supposed to be comprehensible for and easily played by people who have had a couple of shots beforehand. It’s very easy to see “Reel King” as only the skeleton of a slot rather than a slot in its own right – after all, it’s rather bare bones (haa, get it) and only has the most basic features that a 21st century video slot would need. As such, I can perfectly understand why it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea… But honestly, I don’t mind it that much. I think there’s a certain charm to its simplicity which, while not universally appealing, definitely has an audience, even if said audience is mildly intoxicated. If you’re looking for a slot with a bit more meat to it, I’d recommend The Avengers, which has lots of bonus games, not to mention pretty graphics and the famous Marvel progressive jackpot.
